As a trans artist, I understand that clothing is powerful, it is affirming, and comforting, it is a way to tell the world who you are or a way to protect yourself from the world. Clothes can also be fun, explosive, bright, loud, and breathtaking; costumes are no different. For me, costumes are a way of storytelling in an aspect that the audience can look up at a costume and be like "Oh if I was wearing that I'd feel powerful like the actor on stage" or "I get why that actor is wearing a sweater, its comforting, it's home". On the flip side, I want to create costumes that empower the actors because we all know how different a costume can make an actor's performance. and if an actor is comfortable and understands the intent of a costume? their performance is elevated. I also want to help create spaces where actors feel safe with clothing, where actors who may face an uncomfortable relationship with clothing or some form of dysphoria. I want them to feel free to say "Hey I need this", "My body needs this", "This makes me uncomfortable"; I want to have a space where I can hear these things and work with the actors to make their costumes an euphoric and empowering experience.
Every day we wake up and put on costumes; I want to make them interesting.
